Charlie Draper has very kindly been in touch to add his and Andy Raw's views on the new proposed class so It looks like we have all the current NFC runners covered 8)

Hi All.
Just read Doc Stingers views and thought I would just give you a few words regarding mine and Andy Raw’s views regarding NFC and the 2016 rules and to put a couple of minor miss quotes or theory's about us right.

Firstly and most importantly we think it’s great that a NITRO class has been set up and yes it should be Nitro only, and that the rules that have been posted are as far as we can see are a good base if you are going to build one and it will help keep the class more even.

We also hope it is a great success but as things stand we have no plans on switching to nitro but don’t read things in to that are not there it’s because we are happy running what we have at the moment (well when we get it running) and it’s for fun in between MSA/FIA events.
Also because of our other commitments we can run where and when we want if it’s an open event of course be it a FC or altered. Our car is tagged but we only plan on a few events in 2014 starting with a test day.
Both ourselves and Andy plan on having a couple of fun years at none sanctioned events and will gladly run with the Nitro guys while they build their class if it suits all concerned and in 2016 there will be no sour grapes from our camps when they go their own way, after that! we will see where we go when the time comes, times change and nothing is written in stone.

As for our car being a altered with a body dropped on, this is not the case, it was built for the corvette which we have owned for many years and if you look at the chassis it is unmistakable that that’s what it was built for, we put the altered body on as we thought NFAA could be a direction to go but this was not to be, and at that time there was only one FC out there and of course we were Alky.

And as for Andy’s being built for Brackets this is far from correct, yes he chose to run it in brackets but there was nowhere else for him at sanctioned events. The Car has more Nostalgia FC cred than most.
And for next year and just to be part of the overall package he is putting an old style injector on and changing the rear wing so that the 1971 Beetle looks the part. And for those of you that are old enough to remember (which I do lol) Andy’s chassis is the old Gene Snow Monza/Ron Picardo/Mark Needam car with updates from Roy Wilding, Nostalgia FC it is, Nitro it’s not.

Two egt traces. Cylinder 6 is red and looks o.k. Cylinder 3 is green and has given us a little trouble. It drops out for 2 - 3 tenths of a second about 2 tenths into the run. Cylinder 5 is doing a similar thing but is a little worse, on this run however, it was o.k. and is thus not shown.

After the car has backed up from the burnout and all the normal stuff is taken care of it's probably been idling for over two minutes when Tim finally pulls into stage. Because of the nature of this type of engine there is no possibility to 'clear it' in pre-stage as one would an alky car or a Pro Stock car. Getting the engine to fire all 8 cylinders when Tim steps on the throttle is one of the more significant challenges.

I can't think of much else from this file that's particularly interesting so I'll stop here. If anyone wants anything else just shout and I'll post it up.

Have a good evening

Rob

Apologies Charlie if you misunderstood what I said in my comment regarding your car - what I meant was that it was a surprise to me at Dragstalgia when you had the 'Vette body on the car as no one had ever mentioned that you were planning to put it on and as far as I knew it was still sitting in your yard. Similarly my comments regarding Andy's car were based on the assumption (I know, never assume) that as it normally runs in a bracket class it would have been assembled with this in mind - MSD ignition, PG or TH auto box with Trans brake, rather than with a Mag, clutch & Lenco which would make a shift over to NFC rules in 2016 a bigger hurdle as there would be more to change. As you pointed out it is a genuine fuel funny car chassis (always wondered where that one went - question answered) which makes it another rare survivor.

As you say 2016 is a way off yet and who knows what will transpire in the next two years - I may get sensible and start collecting stamps or something !.

Rob wrote:I have no reference data but I believe our egt's to be higher than average ( for this type of engine ) when the car is idling. We run the idle quite lean because I'm a tight a**e
Hard to tell from your graph what your idle temps are (unless your reading temps in RPM rather than F :D )

As for being a "tight a**e" as you put it - I did hear someone make a comparison to a duck once

You're a hard man Paul, a hard man...

I did clarify the egt's in my last post.

Just to clarify Paul, andys car runs a super mag,yes he runs a p/g,have you seen how quick cars are going with glides and autos, and with the hp the same hp NFC motors are making !!!!,he doesn't launch the car off the trans brake,he brakes and whacks it,no different to a proper car,the car ain't got any tricks or gadgets on it,it's an old school set up,I should think the blower and mag where used in the war lol

The data logger issues made me smile. They never had them back in the day but seemed to manage OK.
