There's a bit of confusion creeping into this thread which neads clearing up..... Bob Nixon built two nearly identical slingshots in 1993. The scalloped one was called Purple Haze and had a blown mouse and those sexy 12 spokes up front where as the one that's the subject of this thread originally had unpainted bodywork, an early Dodge hemi and wire wheels up front which were belived to be ex-Ratcatcher. The following year when I owned the car the hubs split during the Hot Rod Drags and Bob went home to pick up a pair of 5 spoke spindle mounts he had hanging around and these were fitted and remained on the car. Bob had a friend in Florida at the time who was building slingshots one of which was featured in Rod and Custom in the early 90s and these cars were based on that.....

Actualy there is three. Ray's "Compcoup" chassis. Brin
That's true but hasn't Ray's got a torsion bar front end? otherwise the same, then of course there was Graham Varma who worked for Bob at the time and built another almost identical slingshot with I think a 50s Pontiac lump which he later changed for a Chevy and the car ended up on the front cover of Custom Car after Adam Sayers rebuilt it.........

Praise be the oricol.
Right then where is Purple haze? (I know wrong thread) I know it was sold without motor(Later replacing Nicks motor(sans blower) after it thew the crank out the sump in HCsss), but is it laid up in somone's shed?
As a side note, The photo of Purple Haze shows Bob in the overalls Andrew in the car and Brett Featherstone next to Bob. Brett's dad Len in the Montigo. Len worked at Fords and sold "Babystone's" grandad the Lotus cortina, getting the family started in drag racing. If i can think of any other tenious links i'll thow them in too

Thats very true, torsion bar front end and although it's a "Bob Nixon" Chassis it was actually built by Chris Isaacs for Matt Howell while Chris was still working for Bob.
To come full circle, Chris did a few chassis updates on the car earlier this year to make it legal to 7.50.

Hello, I'm the new owner! Ron's been in touch and sent me the links to this thread and other pics and info. It's great seeing all the history of the car. I knew a bit about it before I bid but hadn't seen it in it's original slingshot guise.

I've been away and haven't had a chance to do much more than have a quick look at the car but I'll be down at the garage this weekend to see exactly what I've bought. I'll have to take my time sorting it out as money's not exactly overflowing at the moment but I hope to get it back on the track for next spring. I've been fixing cars for years but this my first drag car (was hoping to get my Dodge Dart on the strip when it was finished but I lost it in a fire in July) so I'll be asking lots of stupid questions I suppose :D

Cheers

Paul
