Now this was Long Marston (avon park / shakey) in I reckon 1984, could be 85. Steve Moores Charger and Tony Gransdens Camaro, sorry if I spelt his surname wrong. This was just about when the Camaro was finally up and running strong with the twin turbos

Great photo of Trevor - but what is that guy doing in his underpants? - sorry I will re-phrase that - what is that guy in the underpants doing!

Hi Liz

The guy in the “underpants” is Raymond Rinehart who used to be Tony Bodens odd job man and driver.
He was sold a “nice cushy number” an “all expenses paid holiday”. All he had to do was crew on a top fuel dragster for the weekend. Raymond had done some work on Tony Bodens car in the workshop and had driven the race car to meetings before but had never crewed before and was quite looking forward to it.
Trevor had just had the dodge tow car serviced, so we were some what surprised when the rear brakes failed getting on the ferry in Weymouth ..Ok no problems..and then Trevor tells us that the trailer brakes didn’t work, oh yes and by the way we were carrying all the nitro for all the fuel cars for the meeting..
We drove across France, up the Alps, down the Alps and on to Monza a journey of 1000 miles with only the front drum brakes working (sort off).
We spent a very interesting 12 hours being quizzed by Italian customs as to the contents of the drums we were carrying and as to why we didn’t stop when requested (a customs officer had to get out the way rather sharpish as Trevor while trying desperately to stop)’
We arrived 36 hours late but just in time for 4 hours kip and the Saturdays qualifying!!
The first time we fired the car up Raymond was there one minute and gone the next! He said he was petrified of the car and wouldn’t go any where near it when it was fired up. And that why he’s so far from the car in the picture!
Dennis Priddle rigged up the brakes on the trailer using some cable he found by the side of the track and Pip Hingham towed the race car back to the UK. We drove back in the Dodge (the front breaks were well trashed by now) with a relaxing drive back over the Alps the only excitement when Trevor took out a good length of Armco and the side of the dodge some where in France. (It was dark and by then we really didn’t care)
We all arrived home safe and sound after an eventful week.

Raymond never went drag racing again.
