The Autosport Nostalgia Forum reports that David Render passed away earlier this month. He raced at the 1964 Dragfest and will be best remembered for his hot 1500 Ford powered Fiat 500 which raced at the Pod in the early years with some success. He was RAC sprint champ and was a regular in various ex- Grand Prix cars at the Brighton Speed trials including a ex-John Player Special Lotus 76. !!

While still in his teens he had served in the Tank Corps and was in battle with German Panzers in the days and weeks after D-Day.

David won the Brighton Speed Trials in the golden era of the 1970s when they raced on the full kilometre with Formula One or F5000 single seaters. He won with a 19.7s run in 1975 in a Chevron and a near-record 18.77s in 1976 in the Grand Prix Lotus. If the times seem slow, remember this was over more than 2 quarter miles in length. Terminal speeds were around 190 mph on a narrowing road with a crown and VERY bumpy. Oh and a slight right hand curve at the top end !!

Putting David's kilo time in context, Dante Duce won in the wonderful AA/SP "Moonbeam" in 1964 in 21.95s
