Is it just me, or do you think that to have seen Sammy Miller was an amazing thing. I dont know if there will ever be any one to emullate him.
How did he do it?
Every run totally mind numbing.
The original "Vanishing Point" was unbelieable.
I can remember standing on top of the van at the finish line, and watching him come towards me.
350 mph, 3 seconds!!!
The noise.
The deacceleration as he fought to get it stopped.
What a hero.
If anyone should be in the Hall of Fame.....
Mr Sam Miller.

you're a lucky guy

I only ever saw Sammy run the rocket car once, at the Speedfreaks Balls and that was a privilege to see, also saw him run the jet car a few times.

what a man, what a legend, one of my true racing heros

and I definitely agree Sammy should be in the hall of fame

RIP Slammin' Sammy Miller

Does anybody remember Sammy Millers first run at the Pod?
It was on a saturday afternoon -I think it was 78- Iwas helping the
Wilkins bros with Blood sweat and tears altered at the top of the
fire up road ready to push start when they wheeled Sammy on to the
startline. I climbed on to the roof of my bus and had the most
fantastic view of what happened.when he roared by he nearly blew me
off the top of the bus!! but the thing I will never forget was stunned
silence for a few seconds before thousands of ....in hell!!!and then
mass applause. Nobody could believe what they had just seen !!!

What has happened since that day and whatever might happen in the
future there will never EVER be a moment like that in british
Drag Racing!

SLAMMIN SAMMY R.I.P.

I said van Norm, but it was actually your bus I was standing on! I think I have a great picture of the bus coming down the fire up road. I will dig it out and post it.
I wa running Coyote, at that meeting
As for Sammy, superlatives are not enough, at least we have one over the US, they wouldn't let him run.

Here’s a couple of my lasting memories of Sammy Miller taken form the 1981 Daily Mirror International World Finals meet when he was match racing the ’Oxygen’ dragster against Al Eirdam in ‘Vanishing Point’. These photos have come from my own private collection of slides placed on this thread for posterity.

Can't say that I reember this it but I've just read in the 1981 report from the Daily Mirrow World Finals that Sammy drove Bootsie's 'Gladiator' fuel coupe; the first time the Rocketeer had sat behind the wheel of a normal piston powered race car in six years and ran a very creditable 7.72/178 despite getting the car a little sideways in the process.

Funnily enough sjb, I watched a copy of the old video recording taken from the 'BBC Swap Shop' feature and they didn’t do a bad job interviewing Sammy and Bootsie. In fact presenter Keith Chegwin got to drive the ‘Hellbender’ Jet dragster in 19 seconds I recall at 35 mph! By the way, the feature was split up into two segments lasting twenty minutes.

Ref SJB's question about 'What happened to Al Birdam?'

Its a typo and should read Al Eierdam. His Son has a website.
