Heres Phil Elson with his pushcar/transporter inthe background ~ a bit different to TV tom's various modes of travel! Phils wagon was a Morris LD, and having been stopped by police because the front end of the car was hanging out the back of the van, Phil stretched the body (but not the chassis!) so that the overhang was almost as long as the body in front of the back axle...

Perhaps this strand should go on to include some of the pushcars/towcars of the past, there have been a few neat ones around.

There was something very special about the competition cars being fired up by being pushed down the fire up road, push car straining as the comp car lets up the clutch and waits for fuel/oil pressure before flicking the mag switch and bursts into life and drives off the pushboard. The plug in starter just doesn't stir me in the same way!

I'd agree with martyn about the fire up road,it always added to the excitement when you could see the cars like Mr 6,Firefly,Stormbringer,Tee Rat,Shutdown etc appearing at the top of the fire up road getting ready to run, then the cars getting up to speed and bursting into life, swinging round and being pulled back for the burnout,it all added to the buzz of the actual race.

Picture taken from inside our ford escort van pushcar in 76. must have been a qualifier as there is a
dragster in front. As the song says "These were the GOOD OLD DAYS"

I loved the fireup road as well, always nice to get a wave and the buzz of having a car running that close to you.
